Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show

Join the Jaguar Drivers' Club for the Classic Car season finale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show where we have had a presence ever since 1988. For those of you who visited our stand last year, we will be in the same place, Stand 980 in Hall 1

We always pull together a great array of cars for show visitors, some from our own members, some from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and a few special ones from other sources.  We are happy to announce the first special car for this year a Mark I racing saloon with the famous registration number BUY 1.

At the end of the 1958 production saloon car series, Sir William Lyons and William Heynes decided that Jaguar should build three modified Mark I saloons for the 1959 production car racing season.

• A right hand drive car in Indigo Blue, sold to Mr Tommy Sopwith
• A Pearl Grey one registered 287 JPK, sold to Mr John Coombs
• A British Racing Green one, sold to Mr Briggs Cunningham

The Pearl Grey car was delivered new in March 1959 and first raced on the 30^th at Goodwood, with Coombs' favourite registration, BUY 1.  Driven by Roy Salvadori it finished second to the Indigo Blue car, driven by Ivor Bueb.  Coombs continued to campaign the car successfully through the 1959 season and in September 1959 it was sold on to Mr AC le Fort and was subsequently driven by Peter Sargent for the 1960/61 seasons.

In 1962 the car was sold to Mr GF Williams, who raced it at club level until 1972 before passing it on to his son, Tony.  In March 1998 it was decided to restore the car and prepare it for the Goodwood race that September.  After a major restoration job, it was raced at Goodwood finishing 4th overall.  Tony's own son, Grant, already a veteran racer of Mark II's, has now taken over driving the car.  Click on the YouTube video clip below to see him racing at Goodwood.
