Lights! Camera! Action! After months of peering at press and publicity photos online, we finally got up close and personal with what can only be described as the most controversial concept in Jaguar’s 100-year history.

In the old days, before social media and websites, we didn’t get to see a ‘concept’ or scoop photos in CAR magazine, we just turned up at the Motor Show (as I did in 1961 with my father) or we waited to see a fuzzy black-and-white photo in Autocar or Motor the week after the launch. But as we know, it’s all different now and by the time you read this, other people’s photos of the event will have been plastered all over social media. The difference is that these are photos that Steve Hawke and I took ourselves, standing just a few feet from the real thing and these are my impressions, not those of some professional influencer or media speaker.

So, what did I think of this car that has created so much debate, a lot of it negative? I thought it was amazing. It’s different, I grant you, and it’s radical, but if you turn overleaf to my interview with Jaguar MD Rawdon Glover, you’ll see that radical and different is what he and his design team were aiming for – a copy of nothing. They have certainly achieved that.
