As early as May 1967, Jaguar was working on the next generation of models and a programme was in place for a sporting one, given the internal Jaguar code of XJ21. Various ideas were being considered and Malcolm Sayer was tasked with modifying the E-Type design for the future. He was also asked to consider a replacement based around the forthcoming XJ6 saloon platform.
