During the years when Jaguar Cars was under the British Leyland (BL) banner the brand suffered. The parent company regarded the famous marque as simply a cash-cow to prop up the failing BL line-up of poor-quality models. They did not invest in Jaguar and by the time BL (by then Leyland Cars) was broken up, the damage had been done.
