The new car is described as a ‘design study’, one which, according to Callum “preserves the unmistakable silhouette of the original while redefining every surface, detail and proportion through a modern lens.”
Callum, of course is deeply connected with Jaguar, having spent two decades leading the marque’s design, taking responsibility for the F-Type, F-Pace and I-Pace amongst others. He also led the design on the C-X75, a car that many feel would have been the natural successor to the XJ220 had its production not been cancelled.
Two images of the reimagined XJ200 have been revealed to date, one a profile, the other a rear three quarter, which features a noticeably more aggressive rear, which
the company say boasts “refined contemporary detailing”.
While clearly modernised, the images remain unmistakably XJ220, particularly in profile, albeit with more dramatic, with sharper, sleeker lines feeding the car’s air
intakes. The concept’s rear haunches have also been sharpened, making the car look more modern without losing the feel of the 1991 original.
It is currently unknown if Callum have any plans to turn these concept images into reality, but Callum has previously revisited classic Jaguars, most notably in 2014 with his ‘Mark 2 by Callum’ project. Unlike the Mk2 project, there are considerably fewer XJ220s upon which to base such a project, however as Callum have proven with their revised Aston Martin Vanquish and the creation of a road legal C-X75.
When the XJ220 made its debut, its concept featured a V12 and four-wheel drive, a set-up that was later simplified to rear wheel drive, with power coming from a twin turbocharged V6, a V6 that had been developed for use in the Group B MG Metro 6R4, but it remains to be seen how Callum’s reinterpretation of the car would be powered.
October 2026 marks the 35th anniversary of the 1991 reveal of the XJ220 at the Tokyo Motor Show, which would provide Callum with an ideal opportunity to celebrate one of Jaguar’s much-loved and iconic cars of the last 50 years.
