Designer Gerry McGovern leaves JLR

03 December 2025 | General News

JLR’s chief creative officer and the architect of Jaguar’s Type 00 has left the company

Gerry McGovern, one of the most influential figures in British automotive design, has left Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) after more than 21 years at the company. News of his departure surfaced earlier this week, with reports indicating that McGovern was asked to leave the firm on Monday and his position terminated with immediate effect.

According to sources cited by Autocar India, McGovern was "escorted out of the office," though the precise reasons behind his abrupt exit remain undisclosed. When questioned, JLR provided no comment, and parent company Tata Motors has yet to issue an official response.

JLR has since provided the following statement: “It is untrue that we have terminated Gerry McGovern’s employment and we do not intend to further comment on speculative stories.”

McGovern’s  departure comes just days after PB Balaji, formerly the finance chief at Tata Motors, stepped into the role of JLR CEO following Adrian Mardell’s retirement. This leadership transition may point to Tata Motors seeking greater control over the British car manufacturer, although the full implications are still unknown. What is clear, however, is that McGovern’s exit marks a significant turning point for JLR and its design direction.

Throughout his tenure, McGovern has been a central figure in shaping the identity of both Land Rover and Jaguar. He was known to be a favourite of the late Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Group, and his influence on the company’s board was widely recognised. Under his guidance, JLR underwent a transformative period, launching its "Reimagine" strategy in 2021 and steering both brands towards a more electrified future.

McGovern’s design legacy at JLR is nothing short of remarkable. He masterminded the modern-day reinvention of the iconic Defender, ensuring its enduring popularity and relevance in a rapidly changing market. He played a pivotal role in maintaining the desirability of the Range Rover line-up, which has consistently set benchmarks for luxury SUVs. Perhaps most notably, he oversaw Jaguar’s transition towards becoming an electric-only car maker, spearheading the creation of the Type 00 Concept and laying the foundation for the brand’s future direction.
