Other brands, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volvo, have recently pushed back their all-EV plans, with several manufacturers stating that hybrids will remain in production for longer that originally planned. In his interview, however, Glover insisted “there is no flexibility” in the Jaguar plan to do anything other than EVs.
All new Jaguars will be built on the exclusively-EV Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) platform, Glover confirmed: “We made the decision back in 2021 to have an electric architecture dedicated to us. There isn’t the opportunity to put a V8 into it or something else. We’re committed to being electric.”
With the company looking to the long-term future rather than current market trends, Glover suggested that “EV will be the right platform for us and the powertrain of choice” for the industry as a whole. The JEA platform is expected to take Jaguar well into the 2030s.
Jaguar’s focus on highly individual styling for its next-generation models, previewed by the Type 00 concept unveiled in December 2024, is likely to help the marque stand out in an increasingly crowded market. The company is deliberately moving away from the short-bonnet, cab-forward proportions seen on many EVs, which Glover describes as “perhaps not the most exciting or emotionally engaging” cars.
He went on to insist that Jaguar’s new EVs will be cars bought for their desirability: “Probably more than anything, what we need to do is produce a vehicle that people think is a great car that I really want to own from a brand that I like. The powertrain should be a secondary thing.”
Despite Jaguar’s focus on the future, Glover is keen for the production version of next year’s new four-door GT to offer an authentic Jaguar driving experience. He told Autocar that the chassis team had taken what he described as the greatest Jaguars of all time and “spent days driving the vehicles” in order to discover “what is it about them that is unique and is absolutely inherently Jaguar, and what can we take from this?”.
Commenting on all future Jaguars having six-figure entry prices, Glover stated: “The GT’s job is to say Jaguar is here and can command a price point in excess of £100,000, because the product concept and the brand is capable of doing that.”
