A collection of collectors cars owned by Lewis Hamilton’s dad Anthony led a successful weekend for Iconic Auctioneers at the BRDC Classic Sale, Silverstone, with the 27 strong Collection attracting international bidding and a low-mileage Jaguar XJ220 achieving a UK auction record at £506,250.
Across its collectors’ and competition car auctions, Iconic Auctioneers achieved a combined sale value of £8.2 million and secured four UK and four World auction records.
One of only 69 UK-supplied, right-hand drive examples, the Jaguar XJ220 has covered just 3,277 miles from new and remained with its previous owner for almost 25 years. Finished in a striking Silverstone Green Metallic over light tan leather and supported by an exceptional service history, including regular maintenance by Jaguar Classic, it received bids from around the world as well as enthusiasts in the room, one of which went on to purchase the car.
Three further cars from the Collection achieved six-figure results. A 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre Roadster, comprehensively restored and converted to right-hand drive after originally being supplied through Jaguar Cars New York, sold for £119,250. A beautifully presented, right-hand drive 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, finished in white over navy blue leather and showing little use since its restoration, reached £104,625. Whilst the 2016 David Brown Automotive Speedback GT with just 569 Kilometres from new achieved £202,500.
Elsewhere in the sale, a freshly restored 1927 Bentley 4½-Litre Blower Vanden Plas Tourer re-creation sold for £393,750. Built using a number of period Bentley components and inspired by the legendary Team Cars associated with Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin, the road-registered Bentley had covered around 300 running-in miles since completion. A 2007 Porsche 911 (997.1) GT3 RS also performed strongly, selling for £241,875. The UK-supplied example has covered just 9,201 miles, has only one registered keeper and was offered on the open market for the first time achieving a UK auction record.
