The Princess’ appearance at the party came just a few hours after the then Prince Charles admitted to an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles. It would become an iconic moment as the Princess emerged from the Jaguar wearing what became known in the media as ‘the revenge dress’.
Now 32 years old, the Jaguar served as an official Royal limousine and was used regularly by the Princess until her death in 1997. The car’s first keeper was the Royal Estate at Kensington before being sold to a private owner.
“Jaguar provided cars to the Royal Family for a very long time and they produced, and continue to produce, very high quality cars,” The Market chief executive, Mark Livesey told the BBC.
Finished in dark green, the 4.0 litre automatic has covered jut 45,331 miles in its lifetime and had been maintained by Jaguar Kensington, while being dry-stored. The interior features a beige leather trim with contrasting British Racing Green piping.
The car is being offered with no reserve and is expected to sell for several times more than a normal XJ40, given its provenance. “On one hand it's a 1994 Jaguar, and on the other hand it's actually an ex-royal car as used by the late Princess Diana" notes Mark.
The XJ40 is one of many Jaguars currently listed on the Market’s site including a 2+2 E-Type, a XJS-C and C-Type replica, though none of the other cars can claim such a unique link to the Royal Family.
