Sub-£4k early XJ-S sale

14 October 2024 | Market News

Despite many of today’s XJ-S buyers opting for late-spec models to make the most of the countless improvements carried out during the car’s two-decade career, early examples continue to attract interest – which makes the recent auction sale price of this pre-HE survivor seem a potential bargain at less than £4000 all-in.

Coming with an extensive history file and an indicated mileage of just 40,315, EGK 234T was offered with no reserve. Finished in its original silver with a black leather interior, the car was listed in the most recent sale by Hampson Auctions – and eventually changed hands for a tempting-sounding £3938 including fees.

The XJ-S came complete with a comprehensive folder of paperwork, showing that it was supplied new in August 1978 by University Motors of Kingston upon Thames. Its Leyland Cars Passport to Service booklet features numerous stamps from Guy Salmon up to 19,579 miles, with further services being carried out by University Motors. Included in the sale were the original book pack and additional maintenance records.

Although it looked tidy and presentable in the photographs, this XJ-S was described by its vendor as ‘average’ in terms of its bodywork, electrics, paint and interior, with the latter showing wear to the driver’s seat in particular. However, the engine and transmission were rated ‘good’, despite there being a blow from the exhaust and a power steering failure at the time of the sale. According to a DVLA search, the car hasn’t been taxed since 2018, which suggests it is likely to need a thorough going-over and recommissioning before it hits the road again.

Nevertheless, we can’t help feeling that for the price paid by the winning bidder, this early UK-spec XJ-S represented great value for money. If you’re its latest custodian, make sure you get in touch and tell us your plans for the car.
