The reason for the high estimate was this rare example’s from-new mileage of only 4000 (that’s four-thousand) in the hands of just two owners. In the end, D430 PEJ attracted a winning mid-estimate bid of £16,350 including fees.
Finished in Alpine Green metallic with Magnolia upholstery, this Daimler was supplied new in April 1987 by Lloyd Motors of Aberystwyth, where it spent most of its life before moving to North Yorkshire. It looks to be in exceptional condition throughout, albeit suffering from the XJ40’s famous issue of a sagging headlining – an easy fix via a classic Jaguar specialist.
The two-car Daimler saloon range of 1987 kicked off with the 3.6, which had a list price of £28,495 – a £10,000 increase over the most affordable Jaguar version with the same engine. Helping to account for the jump in price was the Daimler’s equipment list, which not only included driver aids like cruise control, ride-levelling suspension and a limited-slip diff, but also extra luxury via its ‘fluted’ Daimler grille, bootlid plinth, stainless steel door frames, special alloys, extra leather, footwell rugs, burr walnut picnic tables in the backs of the front seats, heated door mirrors, an electric sunroof and more.
This ultra-low-mileage example was being sold with three keys (two still with the supplying dealer’s keyring), the original user manual, PDI certificate, plus a brochure, price list and trim guide. It also came with a recent invoice for light recommissioning work.
