Although the weekend got off to a promising start for Jaguar in the first free practice session on the Friday afternoon, achieving first and fourth positions, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy later failed to qualify in their respective groups, leaving them in 13th and 14th positions on the grid.
Cassidy then went on to lose around one and a half minutes of his first Attack Mode activation due to the first safety car phase, and received a five-second time penalty for ignoring the track limits in turn twelve.
Evans, meanwhile, activated his second Attack Mode over six minutes, only to be involved in the collision just seconds later between Sebastien Buemi of Envision Racing, Jake Hughes of Maserati MSG, and Maximilian Günther of DS Penske in the chicane. Evans ended up pushing the DS Penske onto the Maserati, losing ground on the blocked track. He also lost his Attack Mode and had to restart the race in 20th place.
In the remaining four laps, Evans struggled to make up ground without Attack Mode, while Cassidy’s eighth-place finish was affected by his time penalty. The two Jaguar drivers ended up placed 15th and 16th respectively. After the race, Evans stated: “Today had potential and it was exciting to race in Miami, but unfortunately I got caught up in an incident with Jake and Max, so it was a disappointing race for me.”
Cassidy was quoted as saying: “The car felt good on Friday, and we were quick, but today we struggled to get the performance we know we need. We’ll review together, then we look to Monaco where we go again.”
At the time of writing, Jaguar is in eighth position among the Formula E teams after five races of the season, with just 35 points. Porsche is already 70 points off the lead. The next two races take place on May 3rd/4th in Monaco, where Jaguar celebrated a one-two victory in 2024.
