Jaguar suffers Formula E issues

13 April 2025 | Motorsport News

Hoping for a strong start to the 2025 Formula E season in order to defend its winning title, Jaguar has endured a series of problems during this year’s first four races, which have seen the company facing numerous issues.

Despite its historic win at the São Paulo season-opener in December, which saw Mitch Evans become the first driver in the 11-year history of the series to win from last, Jaguar now finds itself 33 points behind Nissan after race four.

Despite the best efforts of the team, including drivers Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, flaws in Jaguar’s new Gen3 EVO package have caused major setbacks. This latest iteration of Formula E race car allows all-wheel drive and several other enhancements designed to make the sport more exciting and sustainable, building upon the previous Gen3 by incorporating features like an active front powertrain and improved aerodynamics.

In the season-opener in Brazil, Evans’ last place on the grid was down to a front driveshaft issue, while the second race in Saudia Arabia saw him suffer a brake-by-wire problem. Meanwhile, Cassidy suffered a technical infringement in Mexico City qualifying, pushing him to the back of the grid.

Despite Jaguar being a dominant player of the Gen3 era, it has so far struggled with the change to EVO. But as motorsport journalist Nick Golding points out on racingnews365.com, it would be wrong to write off Jaguar this early in the season: “Gen3 EVO has offered a lot of change already, but it would be foolish to think for a second that Jaguar are down and out. Far from it. Formula E has a tendency to throw up surprises; it is one of the reasons why it is consistently attracting new fans. In the past, just when Jaguar have looked out of it, the famous team finds its mojo.”

After the fourth race of the series, Jaguar spent several weeks studying data and conducting private testing in the hope of sorting its early-season problems. But with the imminent fifth race of 2025 being swiftly followed by others in the series, there will now be little time to make changes between races.
