Evans makes history as the first driver to win a Formula E race after starting last. He also joins Lucas di Grassi and Sébastien Buemi as the drivers holding the most victories in Formula E history, with an impressive 13 each.
Evans’ teammate, Nick Cassidy, was forced to retire from the São Paulo EâPrix whilst battling for a possible podium position, after his car suffered suspension damage during an incident with DS Penske’s Maximilian Günther and Porsche’s Pascal Wehrl.
Prior to the race, a technical problem for Mitch Evans prevented him from setting a lap time, which meant he started way down the grid in 22nd (last) position. After just one lap, however, he had moved up to 15th, having achieved an incredible fiveâcar overtake in turn four. Evans continued to make strong progress through the field, until a red flag on lap 21 saw the race paused. He restarted in 10th place, gradually working up to second position over the ensuing laps.
With teammate Cassidy finally out of the race after taking the lead at one point, Evans defended his position throughout an intense final four laps. His eventual record-breaking victory marked the driver’s second E Prix win at São Paulo.
After the exciting season opener, Evans commented: “I am still trying to process this one – it was a crazy race. I made up ten places on the first lap and found myself in the mix quite quickly. After that my focus definitely shifted to getting some big points and possibly a podium, so to come away with a win is incredible.”
